What are the benefits of social media in our classroom?
The main benefit of integrating social media into our classrooms would be to have the ability to talk to students via Facebook or any of the commonly used social networks. It seems that more often today students rely on the Internet for socializing, so giving them the opportunity to do school work on the social media of their choice may fit hand in hand. Another benefit is allowing to easily contact a teacher with a simple blog or message, some teachers are busy with sports and other hobbies after school, so having an easy to manage social media tool could be vital for contacting a teacher, or even a student if needed.
What are the issues with social media?
Some issues regarding social media in my eyes are the accessibility to Internet for some students, some students don't have access to Internet at home, so placing assignments that are due online may be difficult for them to complete. Another issue is the lack of face to face communication. Especially in grades 7-12, some students rely on being shown exactly what to do in order for them to completely grasp the concept.
How could you use social media to communicate with your students and parents?
Social media may really begin to connect with parents throughout this next decade or so. Being able to explain assignments to the student and parent can really demonstrate what point is trying to get across. In addition the parent may become less confused themselves and more able to help out on assignments. Social media also brings up the opportunity to give criticism and support without sounding to harsh in person. Being able to explain to a parent that their student is struggling or misbehaving is now just a click away.
